New Zealand’s most popular blogger, Cameron Slater, was hired as editor of a long-running (well over a century) tabloid paper six months ago. “Running New Zealand’s most popular blog” was literally his only qualification, as he had never had a real job before.

Anyway, he ran the paper into the ground and they’ve stopped publishing. That’s new media for ya.

Greeks in Australia are interesting, there is very much a Greek-Australian culture, including a very distinctive accent, and the less that Greeks participate in it, the more “white” and less of a “w*g” they are (this is a racial slur also applied to Lebanese people, for reference). Like, there are plenty of people who you couldn’t “tell” were Greek if it weren’t for their surname, because they’ve completely assimilated into mainstream Australian whiteness, but someone with a hint of the Greek twang would do well to stay away from anyone with a Southern Cross tattoo. Is it the same with Eastern and Southern European communities in North America?

The second Superman Beyond story arc (which isn’t complete yet, but I’m guessing will be done when issue #20 comes out next week) is about this slavery/liberation deal on an alien planet and there are some good points but it’s a bit fucked up.

Basically Superman when he was a young man visited an alien planet where one species (the Trillians) had enslaved another (Mangals) and used them for manual labour and that sort of thing, and he helped free all the Mangals and they escaped into the forest.

Several decades later, the Trillians view Superman as a monster who drove their peaceful pets mad and incited them to rebellion, resulting in a planetary war that is still raging. They travel to Earth and hire Lobo to catch Superman so that they can take him back to their planet and publicly torture him to death.

Now the Trillians are rightly portrayed as morally monstrous: they enslaved an entire species, and (it turns out) culled them before they could reach adulthood (when they’re huge and strong) and ran forced-breeding pens, and they still don’t accept that they’ve done anything wrong. All of their current troubles are blamed on Superman’s interference, and the public revels in his torture. A child even asks if he can push the button to shock him. Coupled with that is a hatred of their former slaves so strong that the Trillian leader is willing to deploy an untested biological weapon against the Mangals that he knows might result in the death of all life on the planet. And, of course, there’s the one dude who has doubts about all of this and wonders whether they’re realling doing the right thing, because otherwise the message would be racial determinism (and he’s the one who developed the bioweapon, for added Moral Complexity&trademark;).

The Mangals have developed technology equivalent to that of the Trillians, and engage them in warfare partially out of a desire for revenge, but also to liberate those Mangals who are still in bondage (Superman didn’t know about the breeding pens the first time he visited, so the Trillians were able to replace their slaves). They’ve got a nice righteous anger deal going on.

The fucked up part is that Superman, like some kind of jackass, starts preaching to the Mangals (after they rescued him from a Trillian torture chamber, I should add) some kumbaya bullshit about how war never helps, violence never solved anything and everybody should just try to get along. I could deal with a character saying this if it were presented as an example of liberal pacifist naïveté and its inability to deal with the real world, but Superman is the star of this series, and everybody knows he’s meant to be the moral rock here.

You can’t really have Superman doing righteous violence to a whole species, since it doesn’t fit the character, but how can the writers not see anything wrong with what they’re doing here? I’m not even sure that it would be that difficult to find a role for Superman that isn’t tacitly pro-slavery here: my first thought is to have him unilaterally disarm the bad guys, free all remaining slaves (make sure he gets them all), carve out a bunch of separate homelands for the Mangals where they can live their own lives, and declare that they’re under his protection, and if the Trillians take any more Mangal slaves, he’ll come back and break their stuff.

Havana, Jun 19 (Prensa Latina) - In front of a plaque, in a modest park in this capital, a group of citizens paid tribute to the Rosenbergs, the day that marks 60 years of their execution in the United States.

They are members or convened by the Cuban Movement for Peace and the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, urging not to forget and condemn one of the most shameful acts of injustice of the Cold War.

The couple, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, were executed in the electric chair at the Sing Sing prison, on June 19, 1953.

They had been detained in the summer of 1950, on charges with espionage and revealing the secret of the atomic bomb to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

Judge Kaufman, who sentenced them to death, considered that such “acts were more severe than a murder.”

Mobilizations of millions of people who demanded clemency in different latitudes of the planet did not matter.

Neither the couple’s two children, Michael and Robert, seven and ten years old, were orphaned.

“Save the Rosenberg” became an international slogan in which scientists such as Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso agreed.

But the Rosenbergs were scapegoats of a change in the world correlation of forces, contrary to the American establishment.

Today in history: June 18, 1954 – The CIA carries out a coup d’état against the democratically-elected Guatemalan government of Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán, replacing it with a brutal military dictatorship.

The CIA operation was called Operation PBSUCCESS, and included a paramilitary invasion by an anti–communist force. In the early 1950s, the Árbenz Government issued Decree 900, carrying out land reform by expropriating unused farm lands owned by multinational corporations and redistributing the land to Guatemalan peasants. The multinational United Fruit Company (UFC) had owned 42% of the arable land.

In response to the expropriation of idle farmland, the UFC asked President Truman and Eisenhower to take action against Árbenz’s government, which resulted in the 1954 coup, the military dictatorship and then later a 36-year civil war (1960–96), in which more than 200,000 Guatemalans were killed.
