Today I went to McDonalds with my genderqueer non-binary friend. I had a Big Mac, strawberry milkshake and fries and xi had a salad and a water because xi is watching xir weight. We were sitting eating and shooting the shit and we overheard a little kid talking to his/her brother/sister (sorry I don’t know these kids’ gender identities - their mom called them boys but you can never be too sure, and considering the cissexist bullshit that was about to come out of this woman’s mouth, i wouldn’t be surprised if they were girls)

Kid B (the younger one) says to Kid A, “you’re a lesbian!” and quick as a flash, their mother says, “Boys can’t be lesbians, eat your hamburger.”

I MEAN WHAT THE FUCK?! This is so problematic! I almost jumped over the table and punched that bitch in the ear. I mean SO MANY THINGS WRONG with what she said to the poor kid. Boys CAN be lesbians if they identify as lesbians. I have a number of cis male lesbian friends. She was erasing their entire lived experiences with such a small statement. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The kid was like five years old. How does she know that the kid wouldn’t grow up to identify as a lesbian! Scumbags like this are why I firmly believe cis scum bitches should keep their legs closed and quit breeding. Fuck the cis hetero patriarchy!

This is aimed at me. Look at this lack of respect for my identity as non-cis.

A: Saying that simply identifying as the other sex doesn’t mean you necessarily experience their oppression =/= no trans-identifying people are oppressed due to their perceived gender nonconformity.
Trans women, for example, may well experience discrimination due to being perceived as gender nonconforming males. [A few, who pass well as women, may also experience aspects of women’s oppression.]

B: Ultraleftist, I agree that your identity as non-cis needs to be respected.

Yes, I agree that trans women can experience misogyny (in individual instances, rather than as a structural oppression aimed at them). The Tumblr trans crowd’s insistence that “identity” is all there is to it (and, by extension, that women are only oppressed because they “identify” as women) is simply ridiculous, though. What I originally said is that a person’s “identity” is not “socially relevant”. A person’s actions and behaviours can play a part in determining how they are treated, but power structures do not question people on their gender identity before oppressing them. At its core, “gender identity” is just someone’s opinion.

I don’t really care if people call me “cis”, but by transgenderist standards, I’m pretty sure I’m not. I don’t “identify” as a man; I am a man, but I can’t say that I’m particularly attached to the idea of “manhood” or have any great desire to “be a man”. I suppose I technically qualify as “agender” in the Tumblr trans lingo. I was just pointing out that it’s hypocritical to place such importance on respecting how others identify, and then call me “cis” after I tell them that I’m not.

CAMABs NEVER knew male privilege growing up, because they were never men, and most often, because they’re not men, they didn’t fit into the rigid outline of what ‘male’ is supposed to look like, and there was severe backlash because of this. For us trans guys, we didn’t have that kinda problem. At the worst, we were probably accused of being dykes, but that’s pretty much it. We are reinforcing the patriarchy by supposedly establishing that to be masculine is better than to be feminine. Also, you do not experience misogyny in the way that women do and will. That is cissexism, and it is generally very different from misogyny.

The mango bloggers effectively addressed the actual arguments here and here, but I just wanted to say that it’s kind of disheartening to see people unthinkingly repeating this sort of blatant misogyny. And it’s so common.

I’d like you to tell me how the fuck it’s misogynistic for me, a man, to recognize that I need to listen to CAMABs when they speak of their experiences, since, you know, they’re women.

I, as a trans man, need to shut up whenever trans women are talking about their experience.

And you, as someone who I am assuming is cis, need to shut up when trans people are talking about our experiences and calling people out on bullshit.

I don’t believe “gender identities” are socially relevant. They do not affect structural oppression. Society doesn’t care about people’s opinions about they really are inside.

I’ve got a question for you, too. Presumably it’s “cissexist” or “transmisogynist” to say that trans men suffer misogyny at the hands of trans women but not the other way around (right?), because you’re invalidating their gender or whatever. So suppose you see what is ostensibly a “cis” man construction worker catcalling a “cis” woman walking down the street. Is it “transmisogynist” to say that the construction worker is being misogynist? After all, he might actually be a closeted (or perhaps masculine-presenting) trans woman, whereas the woman might actually be a closeted (or feminine-presenting) trans man; surely a woman offering unsolicited comments on a man’s appearance doesn’t count as misogynist street harassment, and it seems pretty cis-centric to just assume that both of these people are cis.

And sorry, but I’m not “cis”.

I am also trans-Australian, so I feel your pain. I am further along my transition than you, though, as I transitioned to living in Canberra six months ago, and I have passing privilege because of my New Zealand accent (similar to the Australian accent). I think this gives me a lot of perspective on transnationality issues, so if you need advice on trans-Australianness, I am available to talk.

A colleague just told me that a student in her class refuses to participate because the title of the class is “Sex and Gender in Society,” and the class title is inherently “cissexist.”

Asked where the term came from: “I learned it on Tumblr.”

Asked why the class title would be “cissexist” - couldn’t explain. Student has now decided to appeal to the Dean.

I want popcorn.

This is getting out of hand. I’m starting to worry that in the next decade, we’ll see calls to end “cissexist” anatomy classes at medical schools.
