I got my mum to send over some new pictures of my old cat. He’s like 11 now, and he’s a big old fatty.

In te reo Māori: He tino rahi te ngeru nā te whānau. (The family cat is very large.)

A meeting of members of New Zealand Young Labour from the 1970s. Sitting around a table at a bar are Phil Goff, Michael Cullen, Helen Clark, Ruth Dyson, and others.

This will be of interest to, like, no one, but this is a picture of a bunch of NZ Labour Party people from the ’70s or something. Many of these people ended up becoming prominent politicians. Sitting there in the middle is Helen Clark, who was Prime Minister from 1999 to 2008. All of the Young Labour people I know remain pretty much completely in love with her.

HBICs of history » Frida Kahlo

Frida (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter, perhaps best known for her self-portraits. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. Her work has also been described as “surrealist”, and in 1938 André Breton, principal initiator of the surrealist movement, described Kahlo’s art as a “ribbon around a bomb”.

Kahlo had a volatile marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems, many of which derived from a traffic accident she experienced as a teenager. These issues are represented in her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.”.

She also stated, “I was born a bitch. I was born a painter.”

Reblogging at the risk of attracting malheureuxmarxists’ ire, because Frida Kahlo was pretty cool.
